Theses retrieval and reference
The Theses Collection
The main collection of over 60,000 theses is held at the Joule Library in the Sackville Street Building. All theses are reference only and can only be used within the Library.
You can ask for theses at the Joule Library counter - advance requests are not necessary. The counter can be contacted on 0161 306 4923 (internal extension: 64923).
The Library collects mainly Doctoral and research Masters theses (though in earlier years a wider range of theses was retained).
All theses, including those from the former Victoria University of Manchester and UMIST, are listed on the Library catalogue.
Search the Library Catalogue for further details. Contact the Theses Librarian for assistance if you cannot find details of the thesis you want to consult.
As well as the Joule Library some site libraries of the John Rylands University Library hold their own theses collections.
- Joule Library (main theses collection)
- Art and Archaeology Site Library
- Kantorowich Library
Doctoral/Research Theses
Electronic versions of many open-access University of Manchester research theses, submitted from the 2010 – 2011 session onwards, are available on eScholar, the University of Manchester’s internal repository.
If you cannot find the research thesis you wish to consult on eScholar, please search the Library Catalogue for a print version.
Older doctoral theses of The University of Manchester are made available electronically from the British Library's Electronic Theses Online Service (EThOS).
