The University of Manchester Library

Members of the public and external membership

Individuals can access the Library on 1 occasion on production of a form of photo ID, after which they will be required to apply for external membership.

External membership is available at a cost of £75 inc. VAT per year or £200 inc. VAT for 3 years and will allow you to borrow up to 4 books (excluding books from the High Demand collection).

Please note membership of the Library is at the discretion of the University Librarian and Director.

Due to licensing restrictions, most of the Library's electronic resources are only available to current staff and students of The University of Manchester.

External users can access some electronic resources (including e-journals) at the dedicated computers located near the Customer Services Desk.

Please ensure that when applying for membership you bring appropriate photo ID, such as a driving licence or passport. We also require a recent utility bill. Failure to bring the appropriate ID may cause a delay in processing your application.

To manage your Library account online you will need to sign up for a username and password.

We would encourage all applicants to contact the Customer Services Desk in case there is an alternative method of access available to them.

To apply for individual membership of the Library, you should contact a member of the Reception and Enquiries team on 0161 275 3716 or Email: uml.membership@manchester.ac.uk
