Zoning
Customers who use any of the facilities within the Library are expected to comply both with a general 'code of considerate behaviour' and the rules applying to the particular Zone they are working in.
Any customer whose behaviour is deemed unacceptable by a member of Library staff may be asked to leave. He or she will only be admitted again the following day.
There is a cafe on the ground floor which serves hot drinks, soup and cold snacks.
The Main Library provides over 2000 study spaces. There are two categories of study space: the Individual Study Zone and the Group Study Zone - each having their own 'code of conduct'.
Library zones
Individual Study
All areas of the Main Library which are not Group Study Zones are for silent, individual study.
You may:
- drink from containers with lids
You must not:
- talk
- eat food
- talk on your mobile phone
- use devices that can be heard by others
Group Study
Green 2 is for quiet, group study.
You may:
- talk quietly
- drink from containers with lids
You must not:
- eat food
- talk on your mobile phone
- use devices that can be heard by others
Mobile phones
You may use mobile phones only in the following areas: The Library lounge; main staircases (Stairs 1, 2 and 3); and the Red-Green and Red-Purple stone staircases.
Code of Considerate Behaviour
We want you to enjoy using the study facilities in this Library. To ensure all our customers can study without hindrance we ask you to comply with the following:
- Consideration and courtesy is shown to fellow library users and Library staff at all times
- Library property including books, equipment and furniture is treated with respect at all times
- Items or activities which may be causing an obstruction to an aisle, staircase or bookstack or which might be restricting access to learning resources must be removed on request
- Food can be consumed only in the Library Lounge
- Customers may drink from containers with lids in the Individual and Group Study Zones
- Put litter in bins
- Blankets or bedding are not permitted; sleeping is actively discouraged
- Customers should be dressed appropriately at all times
Library staff implementing this code and other library policies must be treated with courtesy and respect at all times.
Customers who breach this code may be asked to leave the Library and could be temporarily excluded from all the libraries of the University of Manchester Library for at least the remainder of that day.
