Disability Support Office

Staff at the Disability Support Office liaise with external organisations concerning the possible needs of disabled people and are able to investigate sources of financial and practical assistance which may be available. Staff can also offer advice regarding services and facilities which the University can provide.

The Disability Support Office also provides a Study Skills Room with assistive equipment and software.

The office is located in University Place on the South Campus of the University of Manchester Building (building 37 on the campus map).

To access the DSO, come in the front entrance of University Place, and walk straight ahead to a set of five lift. Take the lift to the second floor. When you exit the lift you will see the Disability Support Office  reception desk just round the corner. The reception is open from 9.30 am to 4 pm on Mondays to Thursdays, and from 9.30 am to 12.30 am on Fridays.

Student Disability Support Group

The Student Disability Support Group includes representatives from each of Faculty or School and most Central Services and can provide support for disabled students. Disability Support Office staff can provide the names and contact details of members of the Group.

VIP units

VIP (Visually Impaired People) units have been established at the Central Library and at a number of branch libraries in Manchester.

A tange of services and facilities are available and staff will train users in the operation of reading aids. In some cases manuals are available on tape and in braille as well as in print.

Available equipment includes:

• a reading machine
• closed-circuit television
• tape recorders
• a braille embosser
• computers with large-print displays and speech synthesis
• Word-processing facilities

Material can be produced in braille or recorded on cassette if required. These services are free but users do have to pay for any paper and tapes which are used.
