Management literature
You are able to access a huge range of business & management literature through the John Rylands University Library. These sources will help you to expand your research, and will be invaluable when you come to construct essays, literature reviews, and/or your dissertation.
Books
Books which focus on the subject discipline of Business and Management are primarily held in the Eddie Davies and Precinct libraries. We also have a wide selection of e-books available to access both on-off campus. You can search for books using the library catalogue.
E-journals & journals databases
The library provides you with access to articles from over 41,000 different journals. This includes all the top-rated peer reviewed business & management academic journals such as Harvard Business Review, Journal of Finance, and Journal of Marketing. You can search for specific journal articles, or you can run general searches for articles on a particular subject.
Searching for a specific journal title
- A-Z Electronic Journals:
Lists all the library's electronic journals by title. You can search for a journal title and link directly to all the volumes/issues. This is useful if the journal title is known, but you are not sure which database it is on.
Search across journals for articles on a specific topic
You can use "Library Search" to search across search a range of electronic journals but to ensure more relevant results we recommend you connect directly to one or more of the key business & management journal databases:
- ABI-Inform (Proquest): search across over 3,000 leading business and management publications for full text articles on a wide range of business and management subjects.
- Business Source Premier (EBSCO): search across over 8,000 business publications, some dating back to 1922. This is the only database that provides Harvard Business Review articles in full text.
- Emerald: search across over 2,000 full text business, management and marketing journals. Excellent for case study research on marketing disciplines and knowledge management.
- Sage Management & Organization Studies : access to Sage's full text business and management collection including titles such as Organization Studies, Human Relations, Journal of Management and Marketing Theory.
- Science Direct: access to Elsevier's collection of electronic journals including titles for business, management and accounting. Particularly useful for finance and decision science.
- WARC - World Advertising Research Centre: Contains over 25,000 articles, case studies, and conference articles for marketing, advertising, media and communications industries.
Other helpful hints:
- If an article is not held in full text, look for the "FIND IT@JRUL" button to search for full text availability on another database.
- It is recommended for a subject search to search individually across at least two of the key databases

E-books and E-book databases
The Library subscribes to a wide range of E-books for Business and Management. You can search using the Library catalogue or browse our e-book databases.
To search using the library catalogue, select "More Search options" and filter the collections to search for Electronic Resources when setting up your search.
Individual E-books databases
- Blackwell Reference Online: encyclopedias and handbooks for business and management including titles such as Blackwell Encyclopedia of Management, Blackwell Handbook of Entrepreneurship, Blackwell Guide to Business Ethics.
- DawsonEra: includes a number of titles for business, management and economics. Note: includes non-subscribed content, limit your searches to "owned content"
- E-books on Ebsco Host: over 500 business and management titles from leading publishers. Note: select "E-books" from menu to browse by subject.
- Oxford Scholarship Online: see titles under Finance and Economics subject area. Note: subscription does not include business and management titles.
- Oxford Reference Online: handy reference materials including english lanuage and bi-lingual dictionaries, dictionaries with glossary of terms for business and management, accounting, economics, finance, and banking.
- OECD Books: annuals, statistical outlooks and country studies providing data on finance and investments, national accounts, historical statistics, transition economics for OECD member countries.
- Safari: Specialises in computing/business information systems.
- SpringerLink: Tip: select "Content Type", "Books" to limit to e-book search
Theses & conference proceedings
- University of Manchester Theses: Details of University of Manchester Phd theses can be found via the Library catalogue. Select "more search options" and limit the collection to theses.
- ETHOS: British Library's electronic theses online providing details for over 250,000 UK theses some of which are available in full text. Note: abstracts are provided where available.
- ISI Web of Science Conference Proceedings (via Web of Knowledge): index to published proceedings for international conferences, symposia, seminars, colloquia, workshops and conventions across a wide range of disciplines. Proceedings relating to Business and Management can be found in the Social Sciences Proceedings on the ISI Web of Science tab.
- Index to Theses: Provides an index of theses accepted for higher degrees by the universities of Great Britain and Ireland, and (where relevant) by the Council for National Academic Awards.Note: abstracts only.
- Proquest Dissertations and Theses: Provides over two million abstracts for doctoral and master's theses (primarily North American) from 1980 onwards.Note: abstracts only but many previews available.
