Sustainability
The principal design objective is to reduce the building's contribution to the cause of climate change by minimising the emissions of CO2.
This will be achieved by reducing the building's needs for energy;
- heat loss will be limited - high thermal insulation performance, triple glazing, air leakage, etc
- natural ventilation will be used when possible to save energy related to fans and pumps
- heat recovery systems will limit the amount of heating and cooling of fresh air
- solar control and high performance glass will reduce solar gains
- day lighting will be maximised with day lighting sensors to prevent lights from being switched on when not needed
- energy efficient appliances and systems will be used
Renewable energy sources will be incorporated to provide some of the energt required;
- photovoltaic tiles on the roof
- solar thermal systems to provide hot water for the café
