Caring for our collections
We are committed to ensuring the items held in our Collections are preserved for future generations. Our purpose built, fully equipped conservation studio opened in 2007 and is based at the John Rylands Library.
Our team of Collection Care experts work with specialist tools and equipment to handle, transport, store and conserve rare items. Donor support can help to support their work in many ways from maintaining climate controlled storage facilities in the John Rylands Library to providing conservation equipment so our conservators undertake repairs to protect the items from further wear. This is painstaking work and is always done sympathetically, to restore the item to as near to its original condition as possible without leaving visible traces of restoration. Repaired items can then be either stored, displayed or accessed by researchers without the risk of further damage.
